Juneteenth: A Revolution in Spacetime for Freedom and Resilience

Today, June 19th, marks Juneteenth, a day of profound significance that reminds us how time and space are not fixed backdrops, but bend, stretch, and move with the mass and energy of human history. For over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, freedom was delayed for enslaved people in Texas. When Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, bringing the news of liberation, it wasn’t just a moment in time; it was a spacetime revolution. The very fabric of their existence, previously constrained by bondage, suddenly expanded into the boundless possibilities of freedom.

This historical moment resonates deeply with our understanding of spacetime today. Just as Einstein showed us that gravity warps the universe’s fabric, so too does the immense gravity of injustice and oppression warp human experience. Juneteenth is a powerful testament to the breaking of those chains, allowing a new, freer reality to unfold.

At the National Council of Negro Women, Columbus Section, we celebrate Juneteenth not just as a day of remembrance, but as a vibrant call to continue the work of liberation and empowerment. It’s a day to acknowledge the long journey towards equity and justice, recognizing that the “time for telling” these stories is always now, and the “place for healing” is in our collective action.

For me, this concept of a “Spacetime Revolution” is deeply personal. My journey through breast cancer taught me how profoundly pain can bend my personal time and space, making moments stretch into eternity or disappear in a blur. Yet, it also revealed how dance – through its motion and rhythm – can help me reclaim and reshape that personal spacetime, moving from suffering to healing through motion.

Juneteenth is a national dance of liberation. It’s a rhythmic reminder that freedom is not just a destination, but a continuous movement, a vow to live fully and vibrantly. As we commemorate this pivotal day, let us all commit to carrying forward the torch of freedom, ensuring that justice reaches every corner of our collective spacetime.

Join us in celebrating this enduring spirit of resilience and liberation.
